KNITTING A DISHCLOTH:

I'm sure we all remember our mothers or grandmothers having a few knitted dishcloths around the house, this particular pattern is a classic and has been around for a long time.

With Christmas around the corner I have been pumping these out like crazy. For me, I enjoy patterns that don't require a lot of mental effort and this pattern from www.verypink.com is the perfect thing to do at the end of the day when you just want to relax and watch some TV.

Needles: size 7 US, straights or circularsYarn: about 35 grams of worsted weight cotton (65 yards)Additional Materials: tapestry needle for weaving in endsGauge: really not important, but I got 4.5 stitches per inch in garter stitch

CO 4 stitches. Knit 1 row.

INCREASE SECTION (EVERY ROW):
K 2, YO, K to end.

Repeat this row until you have the desired width (on the diagonal) of your dishcloth. I repeated this row until I had
50 stitches total on the needle. Then move on to the decrease section.

DECREASE SECTION (EVERY ROW):
K 1, k2tog, YO, k2tog, K to end.

Repeat this row until you have 4 stitches remaining. BO all four stitches, break yarn, and pull end through
last loop to fasten. Weave in ends, and block if desired.

Easy DIY Valentines Day Cupcakes:
It's that time of year again! Although I look for any excuse to make cupcakes, Valentines Day is a pretty legitimate reason to make them. When it comes to cupcakes I think that the classics seem to be the best sellers...my favorite is chocolate cupcakes with vanilla frosting!

So here is a simple recipe to give your sweetheart something sweet this valentines day!

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1½ cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 ounces (1 stick), butter at room temperature
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • ½ cup milk

  • Directions:
    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
    2. Line muffin tin with cupcake liners and set aside.
    3. Sift together the cocoa powder, flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder in a bowl.
    4. Using a mixer, preferrably with paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar about 2 minutes until smooth and creamy. Add the eggs one at a time until mixed.
    5. Stir half of the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, then add milk. Finally stir in the other half of the dry ingredients.
    6. Divide the batter into a prepared cupcake/muffin tin with liners. About 3/4 fulll.
    7. Bake about 20 minutes, or until set. Let cool completely before icing.
    Vanilla Frosting:
    Ingredients:
    • Confectioners Sugar ( About 4-5 cups ), Sifted
    • 1 Tbsp Pure Vanilla Extract
    • 1-2 Tbsp. Milk
    • 1/2 cup butter, softened
    • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
    Directions:
    1. Cream together butter and shortening in mixer, with paddle attachment on medium for about 2 minutes.
    2. Add 1/2 cup powdered sugar and beat until smooth, Add another 1/2 cupe. Add about 2 tsp or more vanilla, to taste.
    3. Add gradually the remaining sugar and add milk until you reach the consitency you desire. A little bit thicker for piping would be best. If you are going to use a spatula to ice them, you can use a little less sugar and more milk for a thinner consitency to spread on the cupcake.
    4. Continue to mix on medium until smooth. Frost!
    Enjoy!

Knitted Accessories:
Your grandmother did it, your mom probably did it too... knitting is back folks! It seems like every shop window I’ve passed by in the last few weeks has featured some sort of knitted accessory, and let me tell you, I love it! I’ve started up knitting within the past six months and it’s such a fun hobby. Being able to knit yourself pretty much whatever you want is a good thing. I hope the trend sticks, and even if it doesn’t... I’ll still knit knit knit!

Here are some ideas for around the house knit accessories:

Easy side tables:
I have just recently moved into a small apartment and am starting to realize space saving is very important. We purchased a bed that came with two fairly large side tables that attach to the headboard. When we set up the bed we realized we had no room at all for these tables. So with a little creative thinking along with the realization I had no place to put my small collection of books, I figured why not stack my books and make them a side table? They fit perfectly in the little nook beside my bed and I now have a place for my books.
